Abstract:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the properties of a 4-ply glass fiber/ MWCNT/ epoxy system against the 4-ply glass fiber/ epoxy resin. Using mechanical mixing, sonication and hand lay-up technique, multi walled carbon nano tube (MWCNT) reinforced E-Glass fiber/ epoxy composites were made. The density and tensile properties of the laminated composites mixed with various percentages of MWCNT (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 vol %) were studied. An increase in density was observed when the amount of carbon nano tube loading was increased from 0.5% to 1.5% in GF/epoxy composites. Incorporation of 0.5vol% and 1vol% of MWCNT has increased tensile strength by 21% and 12.5% and tensile modulus by 22.3% and 9.7% respectively compared to glass fiber/ epoxy composite laminates. Addition of 1.5 vol% of MWCNT results in reduction of the tensile strength and tensile modulus in comparison to glass fiber/epoxy composites because of forming aggregates that acts as stress concentration points in matrix.
